| Supernumerary Police What you should know The Supernumerary Police officers were established under Section 46, of the Police Act CAP 359 of 1968 as amended under Section 418, of the Police Act CAP 359 of laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1990. Under this act, any person (including any government department) that desires to avail himself/herself of the services of one or m ore police officers for the protection of property owned or controlled by him/her may apply to the Inspector-General stating the nature and situation of the property in question and giving such other participation as the Inspector-General may require. A large percentage of members of the public can identify the acronym “SPY” within the police but could not say what the “SPY” really is and the scope of their duties. Often time s, people see vehicles belonging to Banks and other key players, in the financial sector with SPY Police identification marks, but are always perplexed at the meaning of such marks. Big multinationals and transnational’s in the petroleum, energy and other private corporate sectors also have SPY Police officers.These officers are trained personnel with the necessary skills to maintain law and order within their organizations, unlike the regular police officers, who have greater responsibilities. SPY Police officers, understand the corporate culture that is obtainable in their primary environment. Most of them, having worked in such organizations before undergoing the necessary training at the Police Training School, stand better chances to protect their environment. On the appointment of supernumerary Police Officers to protect properties, the party that desires such services is expected to apply through the Inspector General after the request, with the approval of the President, will be granted. Every officer so appointed shall be employed exclusively on duties connected with the protection of those properties. The officers shall have the powers, privileges and immunities of a police officer within the area he is appointed. For employment on administrative duties on police premises, the supernumerary police officer so appoint ted shall be employed exclusively on duties connected with the administration or maintenance of those premises. The officer shall enjoy the powers, privileges and amenities of a police officer within the area of his duties. When a supernumerary police officer is appointed where necessary in the public interest, with the authorization of the president, such an officer shall have the powers, privileges and amenities of a police officer within the area of his primary duties.On appointment of the supernumerary police officers as orderlies, the appropriate authorities are expected to route such a request through the Inspector General or the commissioner of police at the state to make such an appointment. The officer will be appointed with view to the attachment as an orderly to say, a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a senior Government Official, a Commissioner of the Government of a state or a high ranking police officer above the rank of an Assistant Commissioner. Every supernumerary police officer so appointed, shall be employed exclusively on duties connected with the activities of the person to whom he/she is attached. The officer shall while under such an attachment, have throughout Nigeria the powers, privileges and amenities of a police officer.
